The 50 best fiano wines in Australia right now

By Andrew Zuccala

Australians are increasingly falling love with fiano - find the best examples to try here.

Fiano is surging in popularity across Australia right now – with producers and consumers both falling in love with the Italian variety. One reason for fiano’s great appeal is that – depending on the grape’s growing conditions – it will embrace many different wine styles, from steely fresh and mineral to indulgently lush, textural and rich.

We can thank the CSIRO for first bringing fiano vines into Australia in 1978, which Coriole used for its own commercial plantings. These are the oldest fiano vines in Australia, and so it is no surprise they produce the greatest examples of fiano in the country. But now, most fiano vines in Australia come from a different source – the VCR 3 clone which Chalmers brought in years later. This is more widely used because it produces smaller fruit with a more intense flavour profile.

And while fiano is being grown all over Australia, McLaren Vale is overwhelmingly leading the charge when it comes to producing the best fiano wines. Simply check out the list below to see how they dominate when it comes to this variety, but make sure you also sample examples from Adelaide HillsAlpine ValleyClare ValleyGeographeHeathcoteHilltopsHunter Valley and Langhorne Creek
