Mount Langi Ghiran's Langi Shiraz is still one of the greatest examples of cool-climate shiraz in Australia, even 41 years after its first vintage. That's clear to see with its latest release, which was just released on September 1.
Halliday taster Jeni Port gave the 2022 Langi Shiraz an impressive score of 97 points, calling it “another top Langi built for ageing but so, so easy to love right now.”
Even though trends come and go in the world of Australian wine, the Langi Shiraz shows how you can find success in sticking to your guns.
Winemaker Adam Louder shared, “At Langi, the site itself dictates the style – it’s timeless. Since the first vines were planted in 1969, styles have shifted across Australia, yet the premium cool-climate shiraz from Langi has always spoken with such clarity and complexity that the house style has endured.
“For me, it comes down to knowing when to pick and handling the fruit as gently as possible in the winery – that’s what allows the vineyard to shine. After 18 years working at Mount Langi, I’ve learnt how to capture both the essence of the site and the individuality of each season, which is why Langi remains a benchmark for cool-climate shiraz.”
Speaking to the Grampians as a region with great untapped potential, Adam went on to say, “There is great opportunity in the Grampians. I moved back to the Grampians 12 years ago because I believe it is one of the best regions in the world to make cool climate wine.
“There are untapped sites around the base of the mountains here. I think there is great potential for other Rhone varieties like viognier, marsanne, mourvèdre and grenache.”

“Off the original 'old block'. Whole-berry ferments, pressed to oak for mlf, aged 18 months in French barriques (60% new). A work of precision, not to mention, beauty. Following on from the stunning '21 vintage comes another top Langi built for ageing but so, so easy to love right now. Delivers a rare elegance, no edges, everything already in place with a show of deep plum and dark fruits, delightfully spicy, gently cedary and earthy, all the while holding an enduring note of black pepper that lasts. Unwavering as fruit, oak and fine tannins work together as one.” – Jeni Port, 97 points
