Timboon Distillery Christies Cut Whisky

Christie's Cut is a core range product from Timboon, bottled at a powerful 60% and named after Inspector John Christie, who, at the turn of the 19th century, tracked and captured Tom Delaney - an illicit distiller in the Timboon area. Timboon loves its history, so if you want to learn more about the bootlegging that happened during the gold rush era in Victoria, it's definitely worth a visit. Matured exclusively in European ex-tawny casks, this whisky has a somewhat musty nose with massive amounts of dried fruit, burnt sugar, banoffee pie and nutty tannin on the other side, with a distinct menthol note that's to me very Aussie. At 60%, you'd expect this whisky to be hot, and it is, but it's still totally drinkable without water, offering enough texture and sweetness to hold together. Oak and booze dominate, but I'm happy to see Timboon fly that flag without a hint of shame, though the damp wood note on both the nose and finish does let it down a little.
