Our Review
One of Martinborough’s pioneering and most-celebrated producers, Ata Rangi was established in ’80 by Clive Paton, his sister Alison Paton, and, from ’87, his partner Phyll Pattie. The first variety Clive planted was pinot noir – 3000 cuttings imported from one of Burgundy’s finest estates via Auckland-based Malcolm Abel – and the grape is still (and the Abel clone in particular) the jewel in Ata Rangi’s crown. Three single-vineyard expressions are made from estate-owned or managed sites, including Kotinga, Masters, and McCrone, plus the flagship Estate Pinot Noir and the fundraising Crimson Pinot Noir. The wines (which also include chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris, syrah, and a red blend, Célèbre), made since ’03 by Ata Rangi’s thoughtful, considered and detail-oriented winemaker Helen Masters, have a reputation for elegance, finesse and longevity, and are sought-after all over the world. -ANNA WEBSTER
