Our Review
Since it was established in the ’80s, Riddoch (a nod to the Coonawarra region’s founder) has had multiple owners; the latest of which is Paragon Wine Estates who acquired the brand in ’20. Riddoch make mostly red wines (based on cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, and merlot) across four separate tiers. At the top, the Author range is made from the vintage’s best fruit; the Vocation Series consists of four single-vineyard wines, including The Pastoralist; Elgin’s Crossing includes a sparkling shiraz as well as two still wines; and the entry-level Coonawarra range comprises four red wines plus a chardonnay – the winery’s lone white. Winemaker Matthew Reimann sources fruit from reputable growers in the Coonawarra region, however Riddoch’s recent acquisition of the Elgin’s Crossing and Highbank Riddoch vineyards (4ha combined) means that estate-grown wines are in this producer’s near future. -ANNA WEBSTER
