Snowball might seem an odd name for a Margaret River winery until you learn it was established by GP Phil Snowball and wife Louise. The original idea was to simply have a house as a weekend escape from Phil's busy Cottesloe general practice, but within three years of the purchase of the property in 1996, the wine bug had bitten. However, given that there was only 0.4ha available for planting, it was never going to get out of control, even though the pair decided to do all of the vineyard work themselves. -JAMES HALLIDAY
